History & Motivation

Clara Uwamu’s love is unconditional, selfless and rewarding. This unique bond helps to nurture the physical, emotional and social development which lays a positive foundation for the child’s personality, choices and overall behavior.

Clara Uwamu, Mema (as she is fondly called by her grandchildren) is a shining example of the purest form of maternal love and the Back to School Foundation was created in honour of her love and sacrifices for underprivileged children. Mema developed a heart for children at a very young age. She worked under the tutelage of her own mother, who ran a maternity hospital in Delta State, Nigeria, and was especially touched by the plight of the poor and orphaned. She began supporting the work of orphanage homes in her teens and has always done her best to help less privileged children.

Our Foundation is inspired by her passion for God, her dedication to empowering youths and her commitment to educational excellence for all. Our aim is to raise awareness of issues negatively affecting Nigerian children and support their growth in all areas of development, especially in the educational sector. We are focused on sharing the love of children with the world and providing opportunities for all of Nigeria’s youth to have access to academic opportunities, irrespective of their circumstances.

EDUCATION IN NIGERIA

Nigeria is popularly known as the “Giant of Africa” but, for a country with massive wealth and resources, the level of poverty remains unacceptably high. Thousands of families are unable to provide the basic fundamentals for their children and have little hope of ever lifting their families out of abject poverty.

Studies show that over 10.5 million Nigerian children are not enrolled in school and cost is the leading culprit. Many children in Nigeria do not have the financial means to cover the associated costs of sending their children to schools such as uniforms, textbooks, and educational resources. MBSF’s goal is to equip children with basic educational resources that will give them a great start to their academics.
